Installation and update › Update

An update brings an existing EPOS-Plan installation up to date. It replaces the program files and leaves your data untouched. For a first installation on a new machine use the full version instead. What changed from version to version is recorded in the update log.

Who receives updates

Buying EPOS-Plan includes a maintenance and update agreement. It is free for the first three months; after that an annual fee applies. Updates are provided within this agreement only – there is no other way of updating the program. Server access comes with the invoice or on request at info@inekon.de. The services are described under Software service.

Before the update: back up your data

Back up your data before every update. This covers the program directory with the parameter database as well as the two data directories %ProgramData%\WP-Plan and %LocalAppData%\WP-Plan. Simply copying these folders elsewhere is enough and gives you a complete way back.

Note the exact path of the program directory as well – you have to enter it during the update, and the setup does not always suggest the right folder. You find it in the properties of the start menu shortcut. Also record which version is currently installed; it is shown under Help › Version. Close EPOS-Plan completely before starting the update.

Step 1: Download the update file

Sign in to our server with your user name and password and choose Downloads from the user menu. For EPOS-Plan the categories EPOS-Plan and Update are the relevant ones.

Download the file with the word update in its name – not the full version. The full version is meant for new installations only and sets up the data storage afresh. The update package is a zip archive containing Setup.exe. Extract it completely into a local folder before starting the setup; running it from inside the opened archive causes errors because supplied files are missing.

Step 2: Install the update

Start Setup.exe with a right click and “Run as administrator” and confirm the User Account Control prompt. Then choose as the target folder exactly the directory that holds the previous version. The setup points out that it is installing into an existing folder; confirm this – you have backed up your data beforehand. The “Back” button lets you correct your entries, “Install” starts the process.

Only the program files are replaced. Untouched are the parameter database with your master and project data, both data directories and your user settings in the registry. Your acceptance of the licence agreement and the access key of the help assistant are kept as well. An update does not change any shortcut; the program is started as usual afterwards.

Step 3: Check after the update

Start EPOS-Plan and open Help › Version. If the expected new version number appears, the update has arrived. If the window still shows the old number, the installation went into a different directory than the one the shortcut starts from – see If something goes wrong.

Then run an existing project once and compare the key figures with your last results. Small deviations can be intended where a calculation method was refined; the update log names such changes explicitly. Report larger, unexplained differences to us with the project name and both version numbers.

Database updates

New manufacturer data – additional modules, boilers, heat pumps or collectors – is maintained separately from the program. Where a manufacturer provides new data, the update places an update file into the corresponding sub-directory of the installation. This data is not imported automatically but read in through the master data management inside the program, so you stay in control of what enters your data set.

Your own additions to the master data remain in place. If you have modified a supplied record and the same record is delivered again with the update, you decide during the import which version prevails. Back up the database file before importing a large manufacturer database.

Several workstations

Where several workstations are in use, keep them all on the same version, especially when a shared database on a network drive is involved. Apply the update on all machines within a short time and close the program everywhere while doing so. If the database resides on the network, a single database update is sufficient – it does not have to be repeated at every workstation.

If something goes wrong

The old version keeps running

Then the installation went into a different folder. Check the properties of the start menu shortcut to see which directory is actually started and repeat the update with exactly that path. Remove duplicate installations in other folders afterwards to avoid confusion.

The setup reports locked files

EPOS-Plan is still running, even if no window is visible. Close the program, check in Task Manager whether the process is still active and start the setup again. In rare cases only a restart of the machine helps.

Going back to the previous version

Restore the folders you backed up to their original location. Because an update changes neither the data storage nor the settings, this is normally unproblematic. Please tell us what led to the rollback – such feedback goes straight into the next version.

Support

Within the maintenance agreement you reach us on working days from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (CET) on +49 711 9959 826 50 or by e-mail at info@inekon.de, and through remote support with TeamViewer where needed.
